Monotonix @ Annandale Hotel
03/03/2010

I don't think it's an exaggerated claim to say that this was one of the best shows performed anywhere ever. Maybe Monotonix always bring the fuckus like this, maybe they're the best live band to ever grace this lil' weak country (sorry D!D!D!) or maybe the planets aligned, someone slipped a bit of chopped up magic mushroom into my quiche and I was dreaming the entire evening.

Straight Arrows and Further both did admirable jobs warming up the (very) small crowd. Further's new songs sounded fucking awesome - thanks for asking. They fucked up the start of one of them early on, but this was quickly buried and pissed on by the memory of them much pretty slaying everything thereafter. Their new album (2010?) is going to be a real cuntsmasher.

Monotonix

The lead singer of Monotonix was strutting around the venue throughout the early portion of the night. Later on it was decided by Ren Ren that he was performing 'recon' on the place. I still have no idea what this means, but that might be because I'm not a member of the SES like she is. I have also never volunteered for The Ready Reserves.

I also noticed that his knee was heavily strapped and he was walking with a bit of a limp. Apparently, a few months ago, he broke his leg during a performance. The band missed one show (the first time ever, apparently) and then he was right back into it. No plaster cast, no physio, just some duct tape and the strength of his real man hair (chest 'n' back) to keep him going. Real shit.

And it was this 'harder than steel balls' attitude which took this show from 'wild' to the highly desired 'CODE RED - you cunts are going to be spaffing on about this for days' level.

The band started on the floor in front of the stage. They then proceeded to move around the hotel, performing countless times on top of the bar (stealing beer, despite the bartender's best efforts to stop them) and even ending up outside the hotel on Parramatta Road, stage diving off a traffic light.

Monotonix

The best thing was the crowd were 100% into the chaos. The Sydney Pretentiousness (tm) was coat-checked at the door and those in attendance, although fairly small in numbers, were fully immersed in the (completely non-violent) face-smashing riotous behaviour.

Sure, these photos don't really do the performance justice (iPhone!) but they do give you a bit of a sense of just out 'off the fucking chain' this show actually was. I mean, couch/crowd surfing? Come the fuck on.

Thank god you got a pic of the lead singer smacking the drummer's bear bottom with a beer mat... Nobody else seemed to (Daniel Boud where WERE you?) and it's a moment in rock history that needed to be recorded.
