Spider Vomit + Straight Arrows + Talons @ Spectrum
09/11/2007
It was one of those dream line-ups on Friday evening as the fantastic Melbournitez Spider Vomit dropped into town and were lovingly supported by two of Sydney's finest.
Things kicked off with Talons ripping through an impressive set. Our favourite Sydney band blah blah blah.
They were even nice enough to dedicate a song to us. Possibly to ensure they were going to get some sort of favorable mention here. We aren't that cheap are we? We are? Ok.
They were noisy, loud and (as per usual) incredibly awesome.
Side bar: Talons are all set to release their debut EP Ducats later this month. The release show is booked for November 30 at the Hopetoun.
Straight Arrows who were actually on the bill under their new name - the Gay Arrows - romped through an impressive set in their normal entertaining nature, occasionally halting proceedings to ramp up their support and 'pump' up the crowd.
By the time they wrapped up their 40 minute set the room was pretty much full. People were doing those twisting style dancing moves and all sorts. The atmosphere was that nice mix of busy but not overly crowded. People enjoying the show but not being stupid about it either.
Spider Vomit dwell in the same mud-filled pits that Batrider and The Stabs do. Except on acid. Their music is dark with a hit of pyschedilic charm. Their live show was sweaty, full of angst and determination - and completely engaging. From start to finish their wasn't a single dull moment.
There was bodies in the crowd, foxy rock bitchez all across the stage AND double singing action!!
Toy instruments. Deep basslines and drum kicks. Crowd participation. Hints of popiness drenched in stomach acid. Beautiful.
The show was in celebration of the release of Spider Vomit's EP Widows Walk which you should be able to hunt down in stores all across Australia. Although it doesn't quite match the feelings that boil up when seeing them live it is a nice way to fill in the time before they come back.
