Straight Arrows + Richard In Your Mind @ Abercrombie Hotel
24/04/07

We battled through this thing called 'bad weather' last night and went out to see The Straight Arrows at the Abercrombie Hotel. All week I have been exciting about seeing these guys on Saturday, but then when this last minute show came up (with an awesome support line-up to boot) it was all just too tempting.

They are a breathe of fresh air in an overly predictable and copycat 'scene' that I find myself increasingly becoming frustrated and bored by. Maybe it's the fact the whole thing is a bit of a side project that's gaining momentum, or just the sloppy style of their sound, but The Straight Arrows put forward a care-free attitude and, for lack of a better word at hand, wildness that I haven't seen in some time.

Unfortunately, I didn't arrive in time to see the whole bunch of fantastic support bands, including Papa vs Pretty, Cuthbert and the Nightwalkers and Danger Of Death (famous for being 'that band with the song about vomiting on your city'). I did see some final moments of Richard In Your Mind and they were as entertaining as always.

But the buzz in the room was reserved.. for the main event..

Straight Arrows

The Straight Arrows' performance was more of a rock show than I have witnessed in some time. Sure, parts of were acted out - like the occasional tackling between members and the incoherent mumblings between songs, but it only made the whole set more believable and engaging. Even as the packed house dodged rain drops under makeshift tarps and their ears wrestled with the battle of melody vs fuzz, you could tell their was excitement. The freshness and different sound of this band was something that hadn't been paraded in Sydney in any form in recent memory.

If this sparks other bands to put their most creative step forward and not follow the lead of every other band around them that will be fantastic. If it doesn't at least we have The Straight Arrows to fill a much needed gap in the Sydney music scene. They did more than enough to win me over and get me to go to their next show - and I think you should definitely think about going as well.
