The biggest disappointments of 2008
Under The Internet Act Of 2004 we are legally bound to post some lists in December. These lists (by design) are used to summarise the year in easy to understand bullet points and for the next week or so we will put together some carefully constructed summaries that hopefully capture our love, hate and concise feelings towards the last 12 months.
So let's kick this off with a list of things that let us down, angered us, frustrated us and made us laugh and/or cry.
TV On The Radio - Dear Science
Ok, so maybe we are in the minority with our thoughts of this album BUT we didn't want TVOTR to release a jazzed-up-pop-funk record. We wanted the love child of Cookie Mountain and Bloodthirsty Babes - with just a sprinkle of jizz from the Young Liars EP. Sure, Dead Science is still very very enjoyable BUT it's not good enough to lick the perspiration off the face of either of their previous two records.
At The Drive-In didn't reform
Mars Volta continue to make guitar masturbatory jams and Sparta continue to be boring emo pricks. Hurry up and repair the wounds and complete your destiny. Extra disappointment: Minor Threat also didn't reform.
Eddy Current Suppression Ring didn't win the ARIA
Sure they were an outside outside outside OUTSIDE chance AND there were conflicting stories on whether or not they even attended the award show BUT come on!!! It would have been the best thing to happen to Australian music since the time that Australian Idol dropout smacked Molly Meldrum in the face with his extended microphone.
Weezer released ANOTHER shit album
Despite the incredible album cover Weezer Red was an overcooked snooze-fest. For those playing along at home - that's 2 good albums, 2 average ones and 2 stinkers. The next one is the clincher.
Talons didn't release their debut album
Even with a handbag FUN-draising party and the band selling themselves, their hair and their dignity on several occasions OUR FAVOURITE Sydney band (yeah, we said it!) still didn't manage to CON-vince a record label to put their album out. 2009? Let's fucking hope so.
The new version of Beverly Hills 90210 got axed! TWICE!!!
We do realise that this isn't really music related BUT it makes it no less VERY VERY FUCKING TRAGIC. Words can't describe the pain. This never would have happened if they had just agreed to put Tori Spelling in the show. Sure, her acting skillz make Nicole Kidman look like Audrey fucking Hepburn BUT it was certainly the one thing that cursed the 'class of oh eight' from the get go.
The total lack of new albums by Die! Die! Die!, Sunset Rubdown and The Mint Chicks
On the flip side - all three bands are scheduled to release something new next year! 2009 will be greatest year in music history. It will probably be too good. The world will more than likely wank itself to death over the NEW HOT shit that is gonna come out next year. For realz.
Radiohead didn't make it to Australia
They found plenty of time to set-up remix contests, protest against everything and host a billion-or-so web/videocasts BUT couldn't be assed jumping on a plane and heading our way. Fuckers.
Not enough Dead Farmers
Someone PLEASE inject a billion dollars into the Marrickville music scene already. Fuck!
Coldplay didn't break up and/or die
Word is that the group will finally call it quits in 2009 and put the world out of it's misery BUT until then we have to continue to put up with their brainless self-obsessed crap. Urgh.
Black Kids didn't live up to their hype OR their awesome band name
Booooooooo. Music that went from lo-fi greatness to an over-polished turd in five minutes flat.

Feel free to throw your own list of things that let you down in 2008 in the comments.

I wouldn't call the TVOTR a disappointment, I really like it, but I agree it's not as good as their earlier works.
Evil Urges was my biggest disappointment. I love My Morning Jacket, but this album was hugely below standard.
Thankfully there will be a new Sunset Rubdown album in 2009.

First things that come to mind: I was disappointed with the Cut Off Your Hands album. And I hated seeing These New Puritans live. Some people thought it was amazing though.
I'm also disappointed that people are funding 40 Pink shows yet the music industry is financially fucked.

damn those black kids. how dare they trick me into liking that song, then twist it around into a piece of over-produced poptastic wankery. they played me for a fool.
also I totally agree with you about coldplay. when will the nightmare end?
1 decade ago
bella
OH EW.
1. Kings of Leon – Only By The Night
2. The Presets – Apocalypso
3. MGMT – Oracular Spectacular
4. Vampire Weekend – Vampire Weekend
5. Birds of Tokyo – Universes
6. Cut Copy – In Ghost Colours
7. Bloc Party – Intimacy
8. The Grates – Teeth Lost, Hearts Won
9. Empire of the Sun – Walking On A Dream
10. Josh Pyke – Chimney’s Afire
aside from pykelet, that is the worst list I've ever seen in my life. maybe that's why I don't listen to triple J anymore.

i like how Kingsmill looks in that photo.. smug fucking grin on his face that just says "i like Kings Of Leon, aren't they just the coolest" .. fuck off already... 'youth' radio.. argh.

oh .. how is the review looking Bella.. ?
set lists aren't important.. ha

bella
kings of leon are almost as bad as coldplay.
bahaha. has alicia told you... we're making the facebook chat our review, with added written bits. REALLY SORRY that its taking us like ten billion years. promise we will send it to you soooon.

quack
The Kingsmill upped his street cred by adding some extra bliss & n & eso to his list. Frealz.
Agree with TVOTR disappointment, but I've always kind of not gotten what others get out of them - except live where they are pretty unreal. Wolf Parade were a major disappointment as well. We didn't get a new release from anything Outkast and Deerhunter don't look like they like Australia. Other than that, it was a pretty decent year.

Lochy
kings of leon are a disappointment because people once rated them.
the first album was good but not mind blowing and everything after was no better than Nickledick or Hoobastank.
they are the bain of my existence, saw them at Werchter and all they could manage was “Hi were the KOL and were from the United Sates of America”
I had friends who rate Pavement as one of there all time favourite groups telling me KOL are great live! Thought I was missing the point, glad to find a website that understands my pain.

Lochy, you are most welcome. Should you need more material that sympathizes with your miseries, you may also like to read Jonny's review of KoL's latest.

Must admit I did enjoy that article

bella
who is comparing pavement to kings of leon? kill them.
that is one of my favourite reviews purely for 'shitnergy'. genius.
1 decade ago
Lochy
they wouldn't be that silly but was always surprised by the amount of people that thought they were the shit.

Hernandez
yeah Deerhunter and Radiohead not making it to Australia and the lack of good festival lineups were the big let downs. Also everyone losing a load over the Big three of 2008, Presets, MGMT and Kings Of Leon, why!?..........

Sean
The mercury rev album was also a total letdown.

Just read this (#5). Opinion is such a fickle thing...

Sean
i was bored most of that gig.
1 decade ago
kidalias
I can't comment on that particular gig as I wasn't there.
Thinking back on the year, I went to a lot of forgetful gigs.
1 decade ago
Sean
That's the thing...I generally enjoy myself. I'm a very bad critic. So if I found something less than good it must have been shit.

Jonny Yes Yes
i find there is a simple rule, took me a long time to master but seems to now serve me well
if (show == shit) { drink(); }
don't think i went to an unenjoyable show this year... but damn.. i got fucked up at a few.. damn.. crunked out like it was 2001 or something.. word.
oh .. and for the nerds playing at home..
function drink() {
while(!dead) { drink(); }
}

Same. Which is why the These New Puritans gig sticks out in my mind.

I wasn't too impressed by Kanye but I didn't hate it. I had other shows of his to compare against, and Nas preceeded him which was always going to be hard for him to compete with in my mind.

jonny, I honestly wish I could understand the joke. I know in my heart that it was funny.

dude, all that recursion has got to be causing some performance issues jonny.
you should probably look into some benchmarking for your future code posts.

that silly bloody Radiohead did not make it to Australia remains, for me, one of the biggest highlights of 2008.
