SOYA (aka the Spirit Of Youth Awards) is an annual prize that celebrates the work of young art folks (aged 30 and under) by showering them in money, flights and mentorship-ness. The winners in each category - film and animation, fashion, industrial and object design, photography, visual arts, visual communication AND MUSIC - take home $5,000 in CA$H, as well as $5,000 worth of Qantas flights. All winners also get to spend a year with the super special mentor of their category. In some rare cases they may also be allowed to stay in their mentor's spare room.

This year's three finalists in the music category are math rockers My Disco, hip-hop disco queen Catcall and Blue Mountains hippies Cloud Control.

The trio of musical talents beat out a whole bunch of 'young hot kidzzz' that were named in the shortlist a few months ago, including Angela's Dish, Kate Miller-Heidke, Pomomofo, Schvendes, Sydney Omega Ensemble, The Seabellies and West Ridaz.

Previous winners of the award have been Wolf & Cub in 2006 and Young & Restless in 2007. This year the judges have decided to (obvs) 'buck the trend' and not give the prize to a band with an ampersand in their name. Controversial!

The winner will be announced at a ceremony at Sydney's Museum Of Contemporary Art on Wednesday, November 12.
