Our Favourite Albums of 2007

When the time came to put together our annual list of favourite albums of the past twelve months the task seemed a whole lot easier than last year. With the help of our rating system we were able to shortlist the albums from 2007 that we really enjoyed.

Batrider - Tara

Batrider - Tara
Brutal, stripped back, dirty bath water music. You can keep your polished tiresome songs and we will keep worshiping every action of this delightful New Zealand four piece.

----------------------------------

Handsome Furs - Plague Park
Dan Boeckner slows things down from his work with Wolf Parade and the result is a collection of heartfelt songs dripping with fragile lyrics and obscure soundscapes. This music is a soundtrack for a nerdy love story where a lovable hero overcomes tragic adversities such as tinea and gout, rising above the odds and convincing everyone that he is truly fantastic.

----------------------------------

Sunset Rubdown - Random Spirit Lover

Sunset Rubdown - Random Spirit Lover
This album picks up right where last years Shut Up I Am Dreaming left off. It takes everything that is incredibly exciting about what Spencer Krug is able to produce and packs it into eleven brilliant songs. Krug continues to have the golden touch, no doubt this will continue into 2008 with word of a new Wolf Parade being not too far away.

----------------------------------

LCD Soundsystem - Sound Of Silver

LCD Soundsystem - Sound Of Silver
James Murphy took a more focused approach to his music with Sound Of Silver. He builds on his faultless production skills with stark, honest lyrics. The key tracks - All My Friends and Someone Great - provide a brilliant snapshot to the thoughts and feelings of Murphy, who is able to make the songs both incredibly personal and heartfelt - yet still completely accessible by the listener.

----------------------------------

Radiohead - In Rainbows

Radiohead - In Rainbows
Take away all of the hype over the marketing strategy applied by the band and you still have a brilliant record. Fragile, yet undeniably powerful. Radiohead being their brilliant Radiohead selves.

----------------------------------

Talons - Ducats

Talons - Ducats
Wild, brass, emotional punk music. If Talons had somehow found themselves five or so more songs and turned Ducats into an LP it probably would have gone mighty close to a perfect ten rating. This record is a fantastic summary of why this Sydney outfit are so exciting.

----------------------------------

Menomena - Friend and Foe

Menomena - Friend and Foe
Menomena's Friend and Foe walks the line of wacky to the point of almost losing their audience's attention. The pop sensibility that they have garnished this record with keeps everything together and ties the ribbon of what is a fantastic album. Chock of full of heartfelt honesty, an unbelievable range of different sounds and a just enough quirky stupidness to keep it all interesting.

----------------------------------

Battles - Mirrored

Battles - Mirrored
Future space music. A soundtrack to acid tripped circuses. A brilliant - and almost indescribable - record.

----------------------------------

Holy Fuck - LP

Holy Fuck - LP
Electronic music just got fucked. Holy fucked even (cringe?). Bordering on experimental noise at times yet still unbelievably rhythmic and engaging. An unpredictable and ever-changing landscape of sound. The best 'come from nowhere' record of 2007.

----------------------------------

Die! Die! Die! - Promises Promises

Die! Die! Die! - Promises Promises
Hands down the best album we heard in 2007. One half of our editorial team claimed about two weeks after we first got our hands on this record that "this is the music we will tell our kids to listen to in 20 years time". True dat. I am sure we are going to look back in a couple of years and regret not biting the bullet and giving this record a perfect ten.
