Tonight in Sydney: Leichhardt Council Meeting

Update (Wednesday): full report.

Update (9pm): the council unanimously voted for the investigation of the "Live Music and Cultural Precinct". More details tomorrow.

Ordinarily we use that little "tonight in Sydney" title to inform you of a musical experience worthy of your hard-earned free time and dollars. But on this particular occasion, it's about something significantly more important.

Tonight at the monthly "Ordinary" meeting, Leichhardt Mayor Darcy Byrne will present his "Parramatta Road Live Music and Cultural Precinct" proposal, which will be voted on by council members. Here's a rough outline of his plan.

There has (apparently) already been a few complaints from residents over the proposal, so it's incredibly important that you get down there and show some support, turn some of those "yahs" into "nahs" and help assist in turning Parramatta Road from a wasteland of wedding dress outlets and abandoned shopfronts into a great place to go and see late night jazz, heavy deathcore metal or whatever your poison is.

The meeting is at Leichhardt Town Hall and starts at 7pm. We've been informed that the "live precinct" proposal is the first item on the agenda as well, so punctuality is significant. As is, hanging around to see what that whole "dinner with Wayne Pearce" agenda item is all about.
