#6: Charge Group
It's criminal that Charge Group aren't considered a national treasure. But not all that surprising. Positions deemed as value within this nation are traditionally reversed for mining magnets, horse-riding poets and reach-for-the-stars creative types. The latter is our topical focus here. Charge Group are beautifully unambitious in their approach. Yeah, let the talent speak. Let this one just slow burn you for an eternity, rather than wallop you over the dome with some well-timed, majestic and scientifically accurate waveforms.
"What you reckon we should play, mate?", bellowed the second tallest of the Chargers with a mixture of compassion and sheep-sheering manliness. "Whatever you like?", the always-cool inner monologue replied, deafened however by the real world whimper. "Ummm, lullabies?". And they oblige. No problems at all playing an old song, one they've lapped through a billion-or-so times before. Because they're nice and playing their latest "single" would be the kind of trickery attempted by folks with lofty mantelpiece dreams.
Here's the first instalment of the session we recorded with Charge Group at their Cleveland Street rehearsal space, with the band performing Lullaby For The Apocalypse from their (still) amazing 2008 album, Escaping Mankind.
